Lisztomania - the intense fan frenzy directed toward Franz Liszt during his performances in the 1840s. Women fought over his silk handkerchiefs and velvet gloves, which they ripped to shreds as souvenirs.
Adding to his reputation was the fact that Liszt gave away much of his proceeds to charity and humanitarian causes.
If only every object of hysteria nowadays was this generous with his money.
